With my birthday fast approaching I have come to grips with the harsh reality that I no longer have my 16 year old skin. Unfortunately, gone are the days of me getting away with falling asleep with a face full of make up, forgetting to wash my face, and using drugstore brands for my so called “skin regime”. Through the transition of life, travels, moving, work, and those lovely hormones that like to pop up every once and a while, my skin has been through the rounds but is finally receiving the TLC it deserves. Before Christmas I told Aaron I wanted to invest in some nice skincare and to my surprise he got me totally kitted out as a gift. I was so eager and excited to try Aesop’s line since it has such a massive cult following, and honestly, it’s lived up to the hype. So without further ado, here’s my list of my favorite no fail products that will last you through any season.
Aesop Amazing Face Cleanser: Due to my unfortunate luck, I have been cursed with quite sensitive skin. I have to be very conscious of the ingredients included in everything from shampoo and condition, to make up, and even laundry detergent. I’ve tried just about every cleanser out there (seriously, you name it, I’ve probably tried it) and had never had a great run with any cleanser that didn’t completely dry my face out or didn’t exactly do it’s job at cleansing properly until I tried this one. With ingredients like Ylang Ylang and Lavender, it calms the redness and irritation in the skin. This citrus based cleanser not only feels and smells amazing, but really does the job and cleansing out daily build up while still keeping your skin nice and moisturized. If you have sensitive combination skin like me, this is the potion for you. (I use this night and day.)
Aesop B & Tea Balancing Toner: This is the ultimate toner. Unlike so many toners that are incredibly harsh on skin and are alcohol based, this one is chalk packed with vitamins and antioxidants to purify your pores and moisturize the skin rather than leave you feeling dull and dried out. I like to just dab a little bit on my palm after using the cleanser and pat on my pores to really feel my skin drink it up. (I use this night and day.)
Aesop Oil Free Facial Hydrating Serum: Of all the Aesop products I’ve tried since starting this new skincare regime, this is the one I can’t live without. For those of us that have combination skin, you know how difficult it can be to find a moisturizer that moisturizes without leaving you oily or doesn’t moisturize at all. Admittedly, I had never tried a moisturizing serum before this one, but after giving it a go, I don’t think I could ever go back to a creamy moisturizer. A little bit of this goes a long way and will have you feeling hydrated all day long. Your skin will drink this up quickly, so routinely, I use this right before applying make up almost like a primer and find it really helps to give me the naturally, dewy look I love so much. Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and ingredients like Aloe Vera to help you feel hydrated and not oily. (I use this night and day.)
Aesop Control: Now this stuff is magic potion in a tiny tube. Time to time I get a random break out that I feel like I can’t control, but I just dab a tiny bit of this spot healer on and notice the swelling, pain, and redness go down in hours. If my hormones are acting up or I’m just having some issues in a problem area (mine is my always my forehead or chin) I’ll just apply a tiny layer of this after my moisturizing serum and watch it clear up in a day. (I use this when breakouts appear)
Aesop Pate Exfoliante: Since I was little I always loved indulging in an at home spay day. Growing up most of those were spent applying and painfully ripping off the cheapest face mask bought at the nearest pharmacy with my sisters or trying the latest DIY at home remedies, but now that I’m a bit older I realize how important these self-indulgent days actually are to the state of your skin (and sanity for me). After getting a microdermabrasion done once, my esthetician explained to me how important exfoliating is, especially if you want the currently coveted glowing, dewy skin. Exfoliating not only scrubs deep into your pores, but also cleans off layers of dead skin to reveal a nice, new, glowing complexion while also tightening the skin to prevent wrinkles. I’ve used exfoliants in the past (admittedly they were salt scrubs I bought on Amazon for the cheapest prize or the cheap Neutragena stuff at the pharmacy) but this one is the real deal. I actually loved the kit that Aaron had bought for me so much, I headed back into the Aesop store to top it off with an exfoliant and a facial mask for those self-indulgent spa days I love so much. When testing this one out the shop worker told me that this one is used best when treating it almost like a face mask and leaving it on a few extra minutes to really let your skin soak up all the antioxidants. I even like to scrub it over my lips to avoid them getting chapped. (I use this once or twice a week)
Aesop Chamomile Concentrate Anti-Blemish Masque: Last but not least on my list of Aesop favorites is this clay mask. Seeing as I am a firm believer in night-time tea (usually chamomile) I was on board to try this chamomile based mask. It is a great spa night mask but is also even better as another form as a spot treatment. Random breakout pop up? Dab on a little bit of this and leave it on over night and it will disappear. This mask is great because it removes excess oil and extracts impurities, but also uses the chamomile to calm and soothe irritated, sensitive skin. And a major plus? It doesn’t hurt to take off like those cheap pull off masks I mentioned earlier. To complete the at home spa feeling, top it off with the Oil Free Moisturizing Serum and you will glow. (I use this once or twice a week)
Bumble and Bumble Surf Spray & Batiste Dry Shampoo: I had to finish it off with some hair care as well. I don’t use many products on my hair, seeing as I as a serial product user in the past and almost completely killed my hair off for good. Luckily, since I decided to boycott the hair extensions (can I get a hallelujah) and go au’ natural since moving to Australia, my hair is at its healthiest and longest. I’m thinking I might save some of my tips on how I finally got my stubborn mane to grow and how I’ve trained it to create great natural beach waves for a later date, but these are the two hair products I swear by. I wash my hair maybe once a week (secrets I will reveal later), so dry shampoo is my saving grace. I’ve tried really nice, high-end dry shampoo’s but I always come back to this one which is great since it is so cheap and easy to find. I usually like to go for the tropical sent and find this one gives me the best texture and really does soak up the excess oils in my hair while also giving me great volume. I even keep a little travel sized bottle in my bag with me. Also, if you are wanting perfect beach waves all year long, minus the dry crunchy result most products leave, you will love this Bumble and Bumble spray. It smells amazing and has a great balance on the salt water factor so it doesn’t leave your hair dry like so many other salt sprays do. I spray it on at night, loosely and messily throw my hair into a french braid, then sleep on it and wake up to easy, heatless hair. I even spray it on after I’ve curled and styled my mane to bring out my natural wave and create texture.
So to sum it all up, take the jump and invest in some new, grown up skincare products. Don’t be scared to visit stores and ask questions, get suggestions, read reviews, and test out everything, and don’t feel selfish taking good care of your skin. These products look just as amazing on the shelf as they feel on your face, plus sometimes we deserve to make ourselves feel good from the outside in.
